Chapter President Update #98-31

Committee assignments for 1998/99 are as follows:

Bloomberg News reported on August 25th that Zurich "expects its purchase of BAT's financial services unit to be complete by Sept. 7." However, there is an attempt "to block [BAT's] reorganization ... coming from about 40 Blue Cross and Blue Shield health plans." Spokespersons for BAT and Zurich are predicting the merger will be successful in spite of the challenges.

The bylaws call for Chapter elections in the fourth quarter of each year. Guess what starts next week? If your Chapter only holds elections every other year, please convey that information to the National Office. Send Maggie the names of all your officers. It is important that each Chapter has different members filling the President and Treasurer positions. In the past, having a President/Treasurer (one person) has caused problems.

When you conduct your elections, also select delegates to the convention. They can be changed later but it will benefit the National office to get lists of delegates very early as opposed to the last minute. If you enjoyed the convention last year, you're going to love the next one. I would really like to see a 25% increase in attendance and feel we can do it

The management company is introducing Long Term Care in Arizona. It will not be a part of the HMA. In Oklahoma, they introduced Mechanical Breakdown/Extended Warranty as part of the HMA. The policy will be written through a Zurich subsidiary and pay 20% commission but with a $160 cap (maximum). I currently write Mechanical Breakdown policies and get paid far more than 20% with no cap. In fact, I just issued a commission check for $277.20 (20%) to another agent that brokered a policy through me. I am checking to see what can be done on a national level.
